The FAIRTRADE Cotton Mark indicates that a product is made with raw cotton that has been fairly produced and traded, which is directly traceable through all stages of production and separated from non-Fairtrade cotton during processing. A blended fabric can carry this label if percent of the cotton used in the blend is Fairtrade certified.
Chances are, if you’re a Millennial with a little cash, your weekly grocery shop is a blaze of labels and marks with various earth-friendly slogans: Fair Trade , USDA Organic , Cage Free , Massaged By Elves And Cultivated To The Sound Of Harps. Labels, however, can be tricky things. It seems fairly simple to try and shop ethically and healthily — look out for things that sound positive, natural and green! Despite looking simple on the surface, classifying food can be an intriguing business underneath — and you may be being misled by a few common misconceptions.
The basic skinny behind food labels is that the trustworthy ones are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration FDA , or by independent third parties. The FDA’s strict on nutritional claims; you can’t put the word „healthy“ on your food unless it’s low in cholesterol, fat, and sodium and contains 10 percent of the recommended daily intake for something necessary, like fiber.
On other stuff, though, they’re a little more lenient — or don’t regulate at all. For instance, the FDA has no laws at all on using the word „natural“ on food labels. What It Means : This label means some very specific and legal things. It’s not given out by the FDA, but by Fairtrade International , a monitoring body that works worldwide. Everything with the Fairtrade Certified label you recognize has gone through them — and the standards are high.

The well-established concept of Fair Trade produce is synonymous with good working conditions and a fair market rate, yet there exists much debate on whether Fair Trade is really as ethical as it at first appears. With a growing public concern surrounding the sustainability and ethics of consumerism, the question must be asked: How fair is Fair Trade? One major concern surrounding Fair Trade organizations, is that they often engage with companies that behave unethically.
Fair Trade cannot guarantee that producer organizations will be able to sell all their Fair Trade Certified products under agreed conditions, which includes minimum pricing and premiums. The reasons for this failure to meet Fair Trade standards are many, and often are obscured by a lack of transparency in the global market. One primary factor is that it is large cooperatives that control the Fair Trade premium, rather than the farmers themselves.
This means that rather than cutting out the middle man, and offering farmers a more direct compensation for their work, Fair Trade still facilitates a level of bureaucracy that supports an uneven distribution of revenue. Beyond the ambiguities of revenue distribution, the very concept of Fair Trade as we know it is open to criticism for serving as a smokescreen that fails to really address market inequalities.
The price point that separates Fair Trade produce from the rest of the market is often significant enough that lower-income households cannot afford to budget for it. This means that Fair Trade cannot reach mass markets in a way that would really effect wide-scale change, and instead serves as a token gesture to alleviate the guilt of middle-class consumers. This can be seen in the case of Fair Trade coffee, which is typically priced as a high-end product.

There is a lot of talk surrounding sustainability in the fashion industry. However, what do all these buzzwords actually mean? Eco-friendly, fair trade, ethical and green clothing can appear to carry similar meanings, but there are some differences in each. In this blog, we look at ethical trade in the textile sector. Plus, how this can help to improve sustainability across the fashion industry. Fair trade clothing is apparel that has been produced based on ethical trade standards.
In the free market capitalist system that dominates global commerce, which is commonly known as “ free trade ,“ a principle of „survival of the fittest“ dominates. This principle has led to incredible innovations that have improved the lives of millions of people, but it has also led to the harm of factory workers and other links in the supply chain.
Seeking to rectify this imbalance of power, fair trade lays down guidelines for apparel manufacturing that put significant restrictions on the basic free trade model. In many cases, the principles of ethical trade dovetail with other progressive trade principles like environmental sustainability in manufacturing, the promotion of sustainable materials like organic cotton, and the improvement of worker access to health care and other important necessities.
Consumers often prefer apparel products that are fair trade-certified because of the association that this movement has with increased consumer responsibility. In some cases, sustainably produced products from American fashion brands like Patagonia or Prana may also be higher quality than mass-produced conventional clothing from China, India, or Bangladesh.
It’s even common for these garments to be certified by non-profit organizations like Fair Trade USA that also certify products like fair trade coffee. Fair trade, simply put, describes an international movement that strives to assist manufacturers and producers in developing countries to take advantage of better trade deals.

Fairtrade Standards are designed to support the sustainable development of small producer organizations and agricultural workers in developing countries. The Fairtrade Standards incorporate a holistic blend of social, economic and environmental criteria. The standards contain both core requirements and development requirements aimed at improvements that benefit producers and their communities.
Traders are also covered by the standards, underscoring the commitments companies and businesses must make to contribute to sustainability in their supply chains and operations. The Fairtrade Minimum Price is the minimum that producers are paid when selling their products through Fairtrade, and acts as a safety net when market prices drop.
It aims to cover the average costs of sustainably producing a crop and acts as a safety net when market prices drop. Producers get the market price when this is higher and can also negotiate for more. The Fairtrade Premium is an extra sum of money, paid on top of the selling price, that farmers or workers invest in projects of their choice. Fairtrade International sets and reviews the Fairtrade Minimum Price following a transparent process that includes research and consultation with producers, buyers, marketers, Fairtrade member organizations and external experts.
Our pricing database contains both the Fairtrade Minimum Price and the Fairtrade Premium for all products certified as Fairtrade. I feel good.
